Tooth Erosion and Gastroesphageal reflux (GERD):
As an orthodontist and pediatric dentist, I recently encountered a situation in one of my patients that was unusual. This young patient presented with interesting erosion on multiple primary (baby). It was not the normal wear and tear that a tooth of this age should have. Based on a recent lecture, I decided to referral him to his pediatrician to evaluate for reflex disease. Have you ever wondered why primary teeth (baby teeth) turns pink before exfoliating (falls out)? This is due to the permanent teeth erupting underneath causing a hematoma between the two teeth. Kind of like a bruise... This is good indications to start wiggling the loose tooth.
